The
Western Museum of Flight has a unique opportunity to honor the
memory of Louis Zamperini and to inform and inspire local school
children. The Collings Foundation has expressed willingness to
bring their B-24 Liberator Bomber, as well as the B-17 Flying
Fortress, B-25 Mitchell and P-51 Mustang, into the airport on
May 4th through the 6th. For those three days, the aircraft will
be on public display and the museum will serve as the host for
this event.
Aircraft will arrive from Santa Barbara Airport
around noon on Monday, May 4. They will be open for ground tours
from 1 PM to 5 PM, and then they will make up to six 20-minute
flights from 5 to 7 PM. On Tuesday, May 5, up to 3 flights will
be made from 8 to 9 AM and up to 6 flights from 5 to 7 PM. Ground
tours will be available between 9 AM and 5 PM. On Wednesday,
May 6, up to 6 flights will be made from 8 AM to noon. Aircraft
will depart for John Wayne Airport about 1 PM.
This will be a very positive event for all participants
with mutual, long term benefit. It would, of course, be a fitting
tribute to Louis Zamperini. The enthusiastic reception that the
Collings Foundation aircraft will receive from our South Bay
citizens is virtually certain to convince the Foundation to participate
in future events that will enhance the positive image of our
airport and our city.
